Back-to-School Safety Tips Fall 2008 Issue

Kids may think they're invincible, but you know better. Follow these Back-to-School tips from SAFE KIDS, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the American Academy of Pediatrics to keep them safe this fall.

  • Make sure your children only carry about 12% of their body weight in their backpacks.
  • Pack heavier items into backpacks first so that the least amount of strain is placed on your children's necks and spines.
  • Teach your children the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike and make sure they ride with sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
  • Have your children walk or ride their bikes with a sibling, friend or classmate and caution them to avoid vacant lots, fields and other places that do not have many people around.
  • If your children walk or ride bikes to school or the bus stop, plan the easiest route and walk it with them several times before school starts to make sure they're comfortable and familiar with the area.
  • If your children ride the bus, teach them to arrive at the bus stop a few minutes early, stay out of the street, and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it.
  • Strictly observe school-zone speed limits, especially during school hours, and if you must talk on the phone while driving, always use a hands-free device.
  • Teach your children to never talk to or accept rides from people they don't know.
