The holidays are an exciting and busy time of the year. A little extra precaution goes a long way in making sure that you and your family enjoy a safe and healthy holiday season.

Protect Your Identity

Someone's identity is stolen every four seconds, and it's more likely to occur during the holidays when we're busy and not as vigilant as we normally would be. What can you do to help protect yourself?

  • Be stingy with your personal information. Never give out your personal information, such as your Social Security or credit card number, over the phone unless you made the call and you trust the person on the other end.
  • Check your financial information frequently and look for any inaccuracies or obvious fraud.
  • Obtain a copy of your credit report. By law, you get one free copy of your credit report a year. You'll want to take advantage.
  • Shred documents that contain your account or personal information before placing them in the trash. Beware of anyone sorting through your trash. They may be looking for mail with account numbers. Cut or tear through any personal data before disposing.
  • Keep receipts, checks and other financial documents secure. Don't leave documents, your laptop or any valuable property in plain view in your car, especially during the holidays.

Safe Shopping

The number of insurance claims rise during the holidays. One reason is due simply to the higher volume of theft going on in busy and crowded shopping malls. Staying alert, keeping your guard up, and observing these helpful hints will keep you and your family from becoming a holiday target.

  • Secure your car every time you leave it, even if only for a short time.
  • Don't leave your gifts in plain view, and take them home as soon as possible.
  • Park in a well-lit area and as close to the store as possible.

Safe Travel

If you're going out of town during the holidays, take a moment to:

  • Stop the newspaper.
  • Have your mail held at the post office or picked up by a friend.
  • Put away presents that are out in the open.
  • Avoid any outward signs that you are not home.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season from all of us at CIG!
